Artist Statement
My primary interest and largest body of work is photorealistic drawings in pen and pencil. I typically work from photographs provided by customers who wish to combine family photos or add a personal touch to them. Often, my commissions are meant to be gifts from my clients to their loved ones. In addition to photography-based portraiture, I also enjoy drawing the figure from life. Some of my drawings incorporate color and patterns or graphic elements to enhance the formal and conceptual content of the image.
Portraits intrigue me because of the complexity of the human face. Each face is unique and each snapshot captures that face at a unique point in time and space. I enjoy the challenge of replicating something so specific and capturing the emotional significance behind it. There is a lot of nostalgia attached to photographs, especially ones that are important enough to someone for them to commission a drawing of it. I enjoy exploring this connection between pictures, memory, and emotion.
